Coffee Tasting

Coffee Tasting

We’ve got a special shipment of rare and interesting coffees from our good friends in Chiang Rai, Thailand. These beans come from the verdant slopes of Doi Pangkhon, where ethnic Akha people are growing some of the best coffee from mainland Southeast Asia. On top of that, they have been roasted by Mr. Saroj Inthep, who has been at the forefront of developing specialty coffee in Thailand for many years.

In short: Boy, are we excited to share these coffees with you all! Sign up to taste a variety of roasts from coffee that has gone through rare fermentation processes, as well as a comparison of regular and fine robusta brews, and some of our own in-house roasted beans. It will be a fun, caffeine-filled romp!

Space is very limited for this intimate morning at Stonykill, reserve your spot now!

$10 per person,
limited to 6 people.

Please arrive with enough time to start tasting at 9am sharp on Sunday morning so we have enough time to fit it all in.

Join us in the shop for our second loose-leaf tea brewing and tasting experience led by tea enthusiast Carlton Davis. Try new teas from the far reaches of the known world!

About the Event:

This event will focus on brewing, tasting, and enjoying six different teas:
A green cold brew
Two black
Two oolong/wulong:
And one very special rare tea from Carlton’s collection:

The event fee is $20 per participant. Space is limited to 10 participants.

This event occurs on the second floor, up a flight of stairs.

About Carlton:

Carlton's enthusiasm for tea has been fueled first and foremost by the pleasure derived from the act of tea drinking itself. His exploration of tea began over 30 years ago and during that time he has come to enjoy tea in many different forms. From an aged Pu We to an Arnold Palmer to a simple yet profound infusion of fresh mint, Carlton continues to find new horizons in the beauty that unfolds as hot water reacts with well-cultivated and crafted teas.

Carlton’s love of tea has been deepened over the years by tea classes, workshops, and conversations with monks, Qigong Tea-masters, tea dealers and fellow enthusiasts across Asia. He has enhanced his appreciation for the cultural depth and varied histories of tea as his experience of tea drinking becomes more refined with every sip.

Winter Music Film Series: BAYOU MAHARAJA

BAYOU MAHARAJA

Bayou Maharaja the life and music of New Orleans piano legend James Booker.

Description:

"Three and a half minutes into his rendition the live recording of his microcosmically titled composition, "Life," James Booker throws an astonishing run across the piano keys that tells us, in a handful of musical measures, how unfathomable and incalculable his talent was. He knows it, too, letting out the smallest, self-satisfied utterance -- "Hah" -- at the solo's end. Do not, he seems to be warn his audience, try that if you are not Booker. And no one else ever or hence will be Booker.

Lily Keber's insightful documentary into the life of this great New Orleans pianist and one of the world's finest musicians is in real respects a similar high-wire act. It celebrates the astonishing genius and virtuosity of the man, but also reflects on a short life of pain, isolation and disconnection that was also Booker's to endure. Nothing is overstated or made lurid here, nor is this beautiful filmic reflection of a deeply talented and troubled man a romanticized account. Instead, to the extent possible with such an enigmatic artist, the great James Booker is instead found, studied and deeply respected in a careful, wonderful film." -David Simon

A brilliant pianist, his eccentricities and showmanship belied a life of struggle, prejudice, and isolation. A wild genius with a style that combined elements of rhythm-and-blues, jazz, ragtime and classical music, he gained the nicknames "Piano Prince of New Orleans", "Black Liberace" and "Bayou Maharajah". Illustrated with never-before-seen concert footage, rare personal photos and exclusive interviews, the film paints a portrait of this overlooked genius.
